Disadvantages of Sports to Children
There are several benefits that come from playing sports such as collaboration, teamwork and commitment. On the other hand, there are also several disadvantages that come with sports. According to this article, most children engage in sports and are unfortunately prone to some of disadvantages. Physical injury was mentioned in the article and it emphasized how a lot of children who engage in sports end up injured due to the intense physical nature of most sports. Another disadvantage is the bad behavior of other children, whether teammates or opponents. These children mostly exhibit bad sportsmanship and sometimes do whatever it takes to win a game. As a child, sports were very fascinating to me and for this reason I engaged in four different sports: soccer, ping-pong, basketball and volleyball. They all exposed me to different sporting environments and taught me a lot in terms of sportsmanship and sort of injuries I could expect. I wouldn't call injuries in sports as a disadvantage. I would rather call them challenges. There comes a point in sports where an athlete will be challenged and that are when determination and perseverance comes in handy. Also, as an athlete, you choose whom to learn from so in essence, the bad behavior of teammates or opponents should not affect you in any way. One part of being a great athlete is the ability to transform disadvantages into strengths.

There has been a lot of controversy over whether sports help or hinder students, and many questions have been posed as to if they have negative or positive effects on school and if they are worth the time and money spent. Although many experts and researchers say that no good can come from it, playing competitive sports has many more advantages than disadvantages.
(2.) In a recent study conducted by the University of Alberta, students were asked about how included and happy they felt based on whether they participated in any type of sports or not. Those surveyed who participated in sports were reportedly happier and less lonely than those who stayed away from them. Their findings showed that any type of physical activity can help to boost kids into feeling better, even if it’s throwing a frisbee or running. Though research has proved the benefits of being active, many people disagree, saying that mentally, sports harm students. (4.) A CSUS professor, Dr. Steve Gray, argues that the pressure put on young athletes to play well is overwhelming. In an interview, he told KCRA news: “...when you have that kind of pressure on kids, it doesn’t work very well.” Though the point he made is valid, and pressure placed on students is often too much, there are other ways to have all of the benefits and none of the stress. Sports can be played without pressure when there is balance between competitiveness and teamwork. Bill Herenda from Positive Coaching Alliance said that athletics are a great way to prepare kids for life. Sports build friendships, boost confidence in students and help in the future.
Many sports go on during the school year, sometimes year round, and students sometimes feel like they don’t have time for school. (7.) Andre Gregory, a high school student at Jesuit High School, told reporters, “It’s very difficult fitting in studies, and having to go to practice late at night…. studying for tests… remembering plays.” Although some students may feel like they have too much that they have to get done, a coach at the school, Michael Lorenc, says that sports have a positive effect on grades. He told KCRA that students actually do better when they have a high pressure schedule of school and sports, and when a season ends, grades tend to go down. Students who participate in various activities, like sports, have more focus and the grades prove it. Sports and grades do mix, and playing sports can help kids do better academically and achieve higher grades.
